Pan's Labyrinth
watched Pan's Labyrinth (El Laberinto del Fauno) by Guillermo del Toro for the second time last night with joan, pril and shean.ivana baquero was wonderful as Ophelia-- a pretty girl with actual talent. i can't wait to see more of her.
the cinematography is flawless. the story itself is unsettling. i can't imagine how del toro came up with this kind of plot. i like how it mixes fantasy and reality. for a while i thought that maybe the kid was just plain crazy and overly imaginative, until it came to the scene where her mother, Carmen, and Captain Vidal, actually held the mandrake.. by this time, i was thinking, shit, so she's really not imagining it all? if that's the case, maybe she's just psycho for actually following a faun. weird. and how the fuck could hse think that the insect was a fairy (even before it took the shape)? wouldn't you be scared shitless if ever you come across such a creature? i know i would.
i also like how you can't really come to a conclusion about the characters: is this person good or bad, sane or psycho, etc. during the most part of the movie, it looks like the captain is really, really... evil. but throught the movie, you realize that he became that way because of something.. perhaps his father? you see that he means well-- he wants spain to be united, to be with his family and all that. like in the real world, it's just a matter of different viewpoints. and throughout the movie, you think that these rebels, including Mercedes, are the good guys. but towards the end, they're it turns out that they are also ruthless killers-- just like the captain.
i love it. i love the confusion it brings to my sense of reality.
and contrary to popular belief (a.k.a. what my parents' think), this movie is NOT for kids.
nevermind if ithas religious undertones. nevermind the unneccessary scene with entities applauding. this film is easily in my all-time favorite films list (not in any particular order):
- the godfather I
- amelie
- raise the red lantern
- the quick and the dead
- closer
- interview with the vampire
- elizabeth (cate blanchett)
- kill bill vol.1
- sin city
- monsters inc.
- eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
- big fish
- city of god
- silence of the lambs
- kung fu hustle
- hero
- 300
- pan's labyrinth
the next movie to watch is Spiderman 3. and i can't believe that i actually have the opportunity to watch it thrice-- for free. and for all we know, it sucks.
and so i took out my pocket knife. her legs were spread out wide open, and i soon realized the irony of it all. it was easy.. inserting it and cutting her wide open. didn't notice the time until when i was finished. you know what they say: time flies when you're having fun. oh yeah, there were flies. dirty place, you know-- i don't recommend going there. but service is good. they cleaned up the place real fast.
did she say anything? no, not really. i don't think she saw what was coming. coming. heh. d'ya hear what i said? i said coming. hehehe. the irony of it all. and did i tell you that she was a virgin?

i must be crazy to let myself hear see feel say those things
which are not meant to be heard seen felt said at the time
when soundwaves have just reached ears
when eyes have not yet gotten used to the images
when skin has not yet finished peeling its burns
when the right words have not yet been formed
but if you prefer
then i would not be the one to keep you, after all i should be the one to know
those which we thought are dead are more than alive
which are not meant to be heard seen felt said at the time

snow patrol has been having a concert in my head for 3 weeks now. what's annoying is that it's only one song. bet you can't guess which one.
i'm tired of games. it's entertaining at first, but it gets boring, and eventually pointless.

and then she told me that the most beautiful way to die is drowning. not just any drowning. we were talking about the ocean.
can you imagine? she said. imagine. not a cloud in the sky. the sun way, way up there. lying on your back. feeling the breeze on your face and waves caressing your body. that's the best part.
(and here she looked away.)
i think it's about two o'clock, she continued, and bent down to tie her shoelaces.
close your eyes and fall to the ocean floor.
and then i noticed that she was already staring at me. i was afraid for a second that i had something on my face. how would you want to die?
me? i thought. it was a startling question. me dying has never crossed my mind. i don't think it's even a possibility.
i cannot die.
i thought she would laugh at me for saying such an absurd thing. but she was just smiling.
someday, she said. i won't either.
